6 Effective Treatments to Restore Hair Loss

The previous available treatments for hair loss have been extreme and not one treatment works in all patients.  This is because the cause of hair loss can be multifactorial.  Therefore, the treatment of hair loss can be comprised of multiple treatments.

Causes of hair loss:

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal changes (menopause, pregnancy)
  • Normal aging (thinning of hair)
  • Medical conditions (alopecia)
  • Post trauma or post surgery

Treatment options:

  •  Propecia (finasteride)
  • Minoxidil topical in men and women
  • Hair transplant/hair grafting
  • Low-level laser therapy (procedure or helmet)
  • PRP (platelet-rich plasma) with or without microneedling
  • Nutrafol supplements

Propecia

Propecia (finasteride) is used to treat only MALE pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).  It works by decreasing the amount of natural DHT hormone in the body.  Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to increased hair regrowth and slower hair loss.  Hair growth on other areas of the body besides the scalp are not affected by Propecia.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is an over the counter topical treatment for men and women that can help stimulate hair growth.  Results are typically seen after 12 months of use.

Hair transplant/hair grafting

Hair transplants are a medical procedure under general or local anesthesia where the surgeon moves hair from a dense area to a bald are of the head.  This can be done in large sections or in “plugs.”  This has been the gold standard in treatment for years.

Low-level laser therapy

Low-level laser therapy (referred to as red light or cold laser therapy) irradiates photons into scalp tissue.  This encouraged hair growth when the photons are absorbed by the weak follicular cells.  Most commonly has be applied daily, such as the Capillus.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma)

PRP therapy for hair loss is a three-step treatment in which the person’s blood is drawn, processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasma (PRP), and injected into the scalp.  The science behind PRP injections is that the PRP triggers natural hair growth and maintains it by increasing the blood supply to the follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft.  PRP therapy has been around since the 1980’s, it’s proven effectiveness has not be singularly proven, but it is used in other areas such as healing tendons, ligaments, muscles, and increased healing within the skin.  The treatments are done once a month for 4 months.  Results can be seen between 4-12 months.  For maintenance, the injections are repeated every 6 months.

Nutrafol  (Hair Wellness from Within)

Nutrafol is a daily supplement for thinning hair.  It improves hair growth, and overall health.  It is made with natural vitamins and botanical ingredients for whole-body health.  It can replace most of your multivitamins. Nutrafol has been clinically shown to increase hair growth and improve hair quality.  The key ingredients include hydrolyzed marine collagen, Ashwagandha, and Saw Palmetto extract. There are multiple formulations based on each person’s needs:

  • Women
  • Women’s Balance for postmenopausal women
